Walkthrough Videos

A walkthrough video guides a viewer through a process step by step — showing exactly what to do, in order, so they can follow along and replicate it themselves. This format is well suited to onboarding new users, explaining a feature in depth, documenting internal processes, or producing help center content.

Table of Contents

Step 1 Record the Exact User Journey

Use the Screen Recorder to capture the process from start to finish in a single take, following the exact path a user would take. Before recording:

  • Open everything you need in advance — avoid showing setup, loading screens, or navigation that is not part of the walkthrough itself.
  • Use the Microphone Recorder to narrate each step as you perform it. Explain what you are doing and why, not just where you are clicking.
  • If the process has multiple distinct sections, you can record them separately and they will each appear as clips in the Editor.

Step 2 Clean Up the Timeline

Open your recording in the Editor and go to the Media Timeline.

  • Use Trim Start and Trim End to remove any dead time at the beginning and end of the recording.
  • Use Split to divide the recording at natural section boundaries — between steps or phases of the walkthrough.
  • Use Delete to cut out mistakes, long pauses, or repeated attempts.

For multi-clip recordings, work through each clip in order to keep the walkthrough tightly paced. Every step should flow directly into the next without the viewer waiting.

Step 3 Use Zoom to Guide Each Step

Walkthroughs often involve small or specific UI elements — buttons, fields, menu items — that are easy to miss at full resolution. Use the Zoom Effects Timeline to push in close at the moment a viewer needs to see exactly where to click or what to look at.

  • Add a Zoom keyframe at the start of each key action to zoom into the relevant part of the screen.
  • Add a Position keyframe at the same point to center the focus on the correct element.
  • Return to a normal zoom level between steps so the viewer can see the full interface before the next action.

Consistent zoom-in / zoom-out rhythm helps viewers follow along without getting lost.

Step 4 Set a Consistent Layout

Use the Layout Timeline to control how the screen and camera feeds are arranged.

  • For most walkthroughs, a full-screen layout works best — the process being demonstrated should fill the frame.
  • If you are recording with a camera feed for added context, keep the camera small and in a corner so it does not cover the UI.
  • Use a consistent layout throughout — changing the layout mid-walkthrough can be distracting unless there is a clear reason to do so.

Set your aspect ratio in Project Settings before you start editing. Use 16:9 for help center articles, internal documentation, or YouTube. Use 9:16 if you are producing a short-form version for social media.

Step 5 Export for Your Channel

When your edit is complete, open the Exporter and choose your output resolution.

  • 1920 × 1080 (Full HD 1080p) is the standard for help centers, YouTube, and Loom embeds.
  • If you are producing a 9:16 version for social, your Project Settings aspect ratio should already reflect this and the Exporter will match it automatically.
  • If your device is in power saving mode, switch to Performance mode before exporting for a significant improvement in rendering speed.
  • Click Export video and save the MP4 when rendering is complete.
